rIQ is a tool for your ministry

rIQ is an evangelism tool. Young adults know they need help relationally – they want better relationships with family, friends, romantic partners, professors, and co-workers. While a non-Christian might not come to a small group on Romans (even though it is probably wonderful), they will come to a group on sex, dating, or friendship. rIQ meets the felt need (relationships) and creates space for conversations about relationship with God.

rIQ is a discipleship tool. It helps people follow the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving others. It is the practical way that we live out our faith everyday and understand who and whose we are.

rIQ creates intergenerational connectivity. It enriches the church family and builds authentic connection and community. Young adults become an integral part of the church body instead of a side group that functions like a detached youth group.

Q: We don't have a young adult ministry, but we want to do something for our young adults, can this help us?

A: Absolutely! You can use rIQ to start a young adults ministry or use the material to start a young adult small group at your church. You can also use this material to inform and bless your individual conversations with young adults.

Q: We have a young adult ministry already, how would we use rIQ?

A: Fantastic! rIQ is designed to fit into your ministry structure. You pick out what works best for your ministry; whether that is doing a small group on dating, giving a talk on deepening friendships at your weekly gathering, talking about relationship with God or healthy sexuality at your yearly retreat, or starting a mentoring program, whatever blesses your program you're welcome to use. Consultation is also available from your rIQ Trainer to help you determine your ministry needs and what parts of rIQ will be most beneficial.

Q: Do I need special training or credentials to lead the rIQ material?

A: The material is written so that training or specific educational backgrounds are not required. Both lay leaders and paid pastoral staff can pick up the material and use it. Training is available and significantly adds to leaders understanding of the material as well as their ability to connect with young adults in ways that are transformative.

Q: Our teens need help relationally as well. Can I use this with the youth group?

A: Yes! Churches are using rIQ with their youth groups. Though the rIQ material is written for ages 18-28, much of the information is helpful and applicable to teens as well.

Q: Are there ways for us to network with other churches using rIQ to get more ideas?

A: Absolutely! Contact us and we'd be happy to put you in touch with another church leader using rIQ. Also, we have a network of churches using rIQ in our cohort. Consider joining a rIQ cohort to join other churches as they minister to the hearts of young adults.

Q: I want to start rIQ at my church but need to get the leadership on board. Do you have anything I can show them?

A: Indeed we do! You can download and use this sample rIQ curriculum as quick one page summary sheet to show your church leaders. rIQ is a tool for your campus

rIQ fits within your existing campus structures. No need to create a special department, funding, or position. rIQ works within existing campus resources to deepen and strengthen your offerings to students. You can use as little or much of the program as you have need, time, interest, and energy to do.

You don't have to recreate the wheel when it comes to helping students relationally and spiritually. Relationship IQ has been so successful at Pepperdine University since 2005 that we want to share this resource with you. God has used rIQ to transform and bless students in their relationships with Him, parents, family, romantic partners, roommates, professors, friends, and co-workers.

rIQ is a retention tool. When students have healthy relationships on campus they feel more connected to the campus community and have higher rates of resiliency to cope with life's struggles. Investing in students' relational health is an investment in your university.

rIQ prepares students to succeed personally and professionally. The ability to do relationships well significantly impacts every area of life. Employers look for interpersonal skills as one of their top search criteria and how well you get along with co-workers and supervisors impacts your job success. Q: What campus departments might use rIQ?

A: There are multiple departments that rIQ fits into really well. Think of what departments on campus have: small groups, workshops or presentations, mentoring, or retreats. Some possible fits are: Housing and Residential Life, Campus Pastor's or Chaplain's Office, Counseling or Health Center, Student Activities, Student Ministries, or campus clubs. Another option is to include it in the academic curriculum for certain classes in the psychology, religion, or communications divisions.

Q: Can this be used at a high school?

A: Though rIQ is written for ages 18-28, much of the material is applicable to high school students as well. Feel free to use and adapt this material with the teens you minister to. Please note that this is firmly routed in the Christian faith and parts will have to be adapted for use in a public school.

Q: I'd like to use rIQ at our school, but need approval of our departmental leaders. Do you have anything I can show them?
